NLB RPC Errors causing server to need reboot

$

Hi Technet,

We currently have a 4 node Windows 2008 R2 NLB with multiple NICs in each and every so often everything stops working. The issues we have seen are listed below

  • The NLB manager is unable to connect to all of the server (RPC Server unavailable)
  • The below error in the event log on all 4 servers at the same time

This computer was not able to set up a secure session with a domain controller in domain due to the following:
The RPC server is unavailable.
This may lead to authentication problems. Make sure that this computer is connected to the network. If the problem persists, please contact your domain administrator.

ADDITIONAL INFO
If this computer is a domain controller for the specified domain, it sets up the secure session to the primary domain controller emulator in the specified domain. Otherwise, this computer sets up the secure session to any domain controller in the specified domain.

  • The boxes are unable to contact database servers
  • Client calls fail to NLB with RPC Server unavailable

A reboot fixes the issue, but trying to restart the NLB with the following commands does not.

nlb.exe stop, .

nlb.exe reload

nlb.exe start

Any help would be greatly appreciated

SOFS hardware setup advice please

Hello,

I'm looking for some advice on setting up a SOFS cluster,  the following is what I have in mind:

x2 HP DL380p servers running Server 2012 Datacenter and HyperV, a 10Gb network card in each

10Gb switch

x2 HPDL380p servers running server 2012 standard for SOFS cluster, 10Gb network card in each then also either FC or SAS

HP P2000 G3 connected to each SOFS host via FC  or a HP D2700 JBOD connected to each host via SAS

Which would be the better option?  I don't want overkill, however I would like good performance at a decent cost.

One more question,  for the best possible resilience would a P2000 with a D2700 attached or just two D2700's be ok? I don't like the idea of losing 50% space but it looks like mirroring is the only option.

Thanks

Ross

Use legacy CSV LUNs in new Hyper-V 2008 R2 Cluster

Just wondering if it's possible/supported to move several CSV LUNs from an existing 2008 R2 Hyper-V Cluster to a new one that is going to be built?

The exisitng SAN will remain but new Hyper-V Hosts will be provisioned to replace the current ones and all existing VMs need to be migrated.

Cheers for now

Keep Repair CNO to Live Migrate VM

I've 2 node cluster -Win 2012 Hyper-V. Cluster is working fine and can live migrate without any problem. But after a while (few days) saw error message on dashboard mentioned CNO -kerberos security error. When this happen, i cannot perform live migration. Normally what i did was go to CNO, Simulate Failure and then repair. Well, it fixed the problem and able to live migrate. However this problem keep appearing and i use back the same method. Any idea why this happen and prevent to repair. CNO is located in the default Computer container. Please advise

An error occured while starting the New Virtual Machine Wizard - Server 2012 R2, Hyper-V, Failover Cluster, Scale Out File Server

$

Full error (wall of) text:

Unable to cast COM object of type 'System._ComObject' to interface type 'System.Management.IWbemServices'. This operation failed because the QueryInterface call on the COM component for the interface with IID '{9556DC99-828C-11CF-A37E-00AA003240C7}' failed due to the following error: The object invoked has disconnected from its clients. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80010108 (RPC_E_DISCONNECTED)).

Scenario:

I have a two node Hyper-V failover cluster using a HA scale out file server as VM storage. When I attempt to create a virtual machine (through the failover cluster MMC) I get the error. If I attempt to do the same through the regular Hyper-V management console I do not get the error. Also, I only get the error when creating the VM on the 1st node. This started happening after I rebooted the first node to get delegated permissions set on the SOFS share. Turns out a reboot was unnecessary because the 2nd node wasn't rebooted and works just fine. But something during the reboot @#$!ed the first node between FC console and Hyper-V management.

Searches for the error turn up mostly programming sources; nothing about hyper-v or FC.

Cluster Aware Updating set up - VirtualComputerObjectName param ignored

I am trying to set up Cluster Aware Updating, but it always fails with the following error:

Add-CauClusterRole : Unable to create the CAU clustered role because a Network Name resource could not be created.
This can occur if a computer account (virtual computer object) for the role could not be created in the domain. Check
the event log for more information. If the cluster name account does not have permissions to create the object, you
can pre-stage a computer account in Active Directory. Then, use the Add-CauClusterRole Windows PowerShell cmdlet with
the VirtualComputerObjectName parameter to create the CAU clustered role. For more information about pre-staging
computer accounts, see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=237624.
At line:1 char:1+ Add-CauClusterRole -ClusterName cluster -Force -CauPluginName Microsoft.Win ...+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+ CategoryInfo : ObjectNotFound: (:) [Add-CauClusterRole], ClusterUpdateException+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : CouldNotFindVcoName,Microsoft.ClusterAwareUpdating.Commands.AddCauClusterRoleCommand

Here is the PowerShell command I am using

Add-CauClusterRole -ClusterName cluster -Force -CauPluginName Microsoft.WindowsUpdatePlugin -MaxRetriesPerNode 3 -CauPluginArguments @{ 'IncludeRecommendedUpdates' = 'False' } -StartDate "7/17/2013 3:00:00 AM" -DaysOfWeek 16 -WeeksOfMonth
 @(2) -VirtualComputerObjectName cau -EnableFirewallRules;

I've prestaged the 'cau' computer object in Active Directory, and given full control to the 'cluster' object.

However, when I run the command, it still tries to create a computer object with a random name, seemingly completely ignoring the VirtualComputerObjectName param. Any thoughts?

IPv4 support for Failover Clustering Windows 2008R2

Hi,

We are having issue with our SQL2008 cluster. Preferred Node randomly failover to another node and it has been happening for couple time during the years.

For some of the application like VMware VCenter that are not cluster aware, service will fail instantly when failover happen.

After I did some research, I found Windows Server 2008R2 failover clustering use IPv6 by default for keeping track of its nodes heartbeat. And also there is known issue to VMware SQL node packet dropping to large amount of traffic.

The VMware part should be a easy fix.....Unfortunately, not all our Network equipment are IPv6 ready.

My question is: What is the proper way to disable IPv6 from a production Failover cluster?

Thanks.

Clustered CA failover but the CA appl not started

After changing the Clustered CA servicename, and testing the CA failover, I see that both the storage and the CA servicename failed over successfully but the CA apllication itself did not start, unless I  manually start it in the new node.  Am I missing something?   I have the auto-start option selected in the cluster Service and Applications.   It seems the servicename is decoupled from the actually CA application.  Any clue will help.

3 Nodes SQL 2008 cluster failover scenario.

I want to create a 3 node cluster of SQL 2008 over windows 2008 R2 cluster.

If I use Majority Nodes with Disk as the quorum then:

1) Cluster will continue working after the failure of 1 Node.

2) Cluster will continue to work after the failure of disk-witness.

Question:

1) Will cluster continue to work if Disk-witness is online and 2 Nodes are down.

2) If NO, then How am I achieving the high-availability of SQL database even when I am having One node and one Disk-witness available. Because even if I have all 3 nodes available still the SQL database service will be served by only one node. The fail-over cluster does not load balance the user load among the participating servers.

Dear All,

I would like to ask few things about Windows 2008 R2 and SQL Cluster.

1. Would multi-subnet for cluster be difficult to deploy and will it have difficulty to use?

2. Can I use 1 network port for both cluster production network and heartbeat network?

Many Thanks

Best Regards,

Elroy

NLB Cluster Multicast Windows Server 2012

Hi,

I have Cluster switched to multicast. My cluster have two node. Problem is that one of nodes do not receive multicast trafic. Is that due to online\standby between nodes or something else?

Thanks.

Network Adapter Question (Network Location)

$

I have a W2K8R2 SP1 (Datacenter Edition) Failover Cluster. Each node has 8 network interfaces: 4 External Virtual Networks connected to company network switches, 2 iSCSI interfaces (CSV) and 2 management interfaces on different subnets. NW3 (subnet 10, same subnet as the domain controller) is listed as a "Domain" network. NW4 (subnet 20) is listed as a "Public" network. With the exception of the External Virtual Networks, all cables are routed to a pair of HP V1810G 48 port gigabit switches trunked together. Each switch has 2 VLANs, one for iSCSI only and another for all others.

I was expecting NW4 to be listed as a domain network as well. Perhaps I have misconfigured something? Should I create another VLAN for subnet 20? Use more switches? Add a NIC to the domain controller on subnet 20? Maybe I need to register the subnet 20 IP addresses in DNS?

I am not a network engineer so I don't understand all of the intricacies involved. The network diagrams I have seen in researching this are line diagrams and not a physical representation of the network.

Thanks for your assistance, Vint

Hyper-v 2012 Cluster with CSV attached via iSCSI to SAN - Metric Settings?

$

Hi,

What metric should I use for my iSCSI netowrk connection from my cluster to my SAN?. I have seen this article (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff182335(v=ws.10).aspx) about changing the Prefernece but not sure.

This is my setup from one of my hosts. CHB = Cluster Heartbeat / iSCSI = CSV connection to SAN (iSCSI with MPIO)

Should I change iSCSI to 900 and make it the lowest?

DTC in Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V Cluster

$

Hello,

we have several Clusters with Hyper-V, based on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 and also on Windows Server 2012.

In the past (for 2003, 2008), Microsoft stated that a DTC Cluster Role should be configured inside a Cluster.

Actually for Windows Server 2012, I never found anything in the Web saying that this is needed, so I did not configure it for our new Clusters.

The question is:
Is it needed?
If yes, whats the difference of using or not using?

Thanks for your answers,
Jens

"Optimize" a CSV volume

$

I have a H-V 2012 cluster with 3 nodes.  I use a CSV volume to store the VMs.  I have all the latest patches installed. I have an Equallogic SAN (PS4000) with the latest firmware on it providing the LUN for the CSV.  Everything in my environment is supposed to support re-thinning (or unmapping, or whatever the right term is) the LUN.  I have about 500 GB of unused space on the 2TB volume, and the volume was thin provisioned.  A restore of some very large vhd files from backup caused the thin provisioned volume to grow and to use almost the entire volume at one point but the corrupt VHDs have since been deleted.  Now I have "dirty" blocks in the LUN that I want to reclaim into free space on the SAN. This all happens, apparently, when Server 2012 performs an "Optimize" on the disks.  In my environment this is scheduled to happen once a week.  It did apparently do something this last week, because my volume utilization on the SAN went from 96% to 91%.  Not even close to reclaiming all dirty blocks, but it's a start I guess.  So now I went in to the "Defragment and Optimize Drives" utility and told it to commence a manual optimization.  Nothing happens and event viewer give me this error:

The volume VMStorage1 (C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1) was not optimized because an error was encountered: CSVFS failed operation as volume is not in redirected mode. (0x8007174F)

So my questions are these:

Shouldn't it put the CSV in redirect mode if it needs to do this in order to optimize the drive automatically?

If it can't do this automatically, how did it return 5% of the CSV SAN volume to free space last week?

Can I put the volume in redirect mode manually and do the optimize manually? Redirect mode is not supposed to be necessary in 2012 CSV any more- at least not for backup.  Why here?

Will my environment re-thin, Unmap, whatever?  It appears it MIGHT.  Does it take several iterations (ie weeks)?

Can anyone explain this incredibly vague and cloaked process from a Windows server 2012 perspective?

Thank you for any help!

Hi,

Can anyone please assist me in what should be the correct setup for the following multi site single node clustering as per this diagram below:

I need some guidance and clarification in terms of:

1. The best place for the File Share Witness location in each sites.
2. VLAN class for the heart beat network (if it is needed)

Thanks in advance.

CHKDSK trouble on WIN2k3 64bit cluster

$

Hello,

ENVIRONMENT:

We have a 2-node Windows 2003 Enterprise SP2 64bit MS SQL 2005 cluster. MS SQL consists of two instances. Several LUNs originating from the same SAN are presented to it. Our 3rd party server backup software only backups the local drives, while the LUNs holding SQL data are backed up using another 3rd party software intended for MS SQL backups.

PROBLEM:

Recently we've ran chkdsk for each LUN and local disk and discovered there are errors reported for each of them. Due to the nature of the setup (cluster), chkdsk has been ran in read-only mode first, so no specifics have been offered. Upon seeing indication of errors, we then ran it with /f switch in offline mode and for each LUN it did not complete reporting "An unspecified error occurred” with no error code. Example partial output is listed below:

"

CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3)...
0 percent complete. (0 of 8272 file records processed)
Deleted corrupt attribute list entry
with type code 128 in file 40.
Deleted corrupt attribute list entry
with type code 128 in file 40.
Deleting corrupt attribute record (128, "")
from file record segment 304.
Deleted corrupt attribute list entry
with type code 128 in file 343.
An unspecified error occurred.

"

DISCOVERED SO FAR:

MFT of each LUN is not dirty (checked with chkntfs). Nothing alarming gets logged to Event Logs, apart from the entries that chkdsk was ran in read-only mode. Reported disk space OS-side is valid. Nothing apart from OS and SQL holds handles on the LUNs (checked with SysInternals' Handle tool). Worth mentioning is that chkdsk scan was never offered by the OS itswlf and we only but discovered this problem when running chkdsk on demand.

What's interesting, for toubleshooting purposes we have setup a brand new LUN and replicated entirely one of the troubled LUN's content (including permissions and GIUD) to it. We then presented this test LUN to a test Windows 2008 based machine and ran chkdsk for it which returned no errors.

Seems that the issue is somehow limited to Windows 2003 only?

Please advise how this can be mitigated or if this is a false positive.

Thank you,

Windows versions acceptable in a Windows 2008 R2 failover cluster.

Does MS support different versions of Windows in the same cluster? For example, if I have an existing Windows 2008 R2 cluster with two 2008 R2 nodes in it and I want to add a new node, can I add a Windows Server 2012 node to that cluster?

If I can, should I? Is it a bad practice to allow cross versions in the same cluster?

The Client Access Point is not yet available

$

I setup a new Server 2012 file server cluster. When I try to create a share it says "The Client ACcess Point 'cmpfs01' is not yet available. This may be due to network propagation delays, please try again later."

Here is the thing though. It resolves by DNS, it has ACTIVE shares and you can get to the shares by \\cmpfs01\SHARENAME. So what is going on with the bogus error message?
