All VM down in hyper v

$

Below is my network Scenario,

2 Windows 2012 Hyper vhost (HP server) configured cluster manager.

HP SAN configured as data server.

4 virtual machines including Domain controller and DNS server. ( DC 1 AND DC 2)

Yesterday Upgraded Avast Antivirus on both the host. After some time none of the users were able to browse the internet or log on to their computer. Up on checking I found that all the VM are in failed state. As the DNS server is one of the failed VM the internet is also down. I have tried restarting HP server and SAN but none of the VM is listed in the hyper manager. In cluster manager I can see both the nodes online. I am able to ping from host 1 to host 2. Not sure what to do now?  Please help

enabling iscsi initiator causes vss to hang.

Hello Members,

OS: Windows 2016 Server Std

I got into a strange issue on the Windows cluster 2-node setup.

On one of the node. If the iSCSI initiator service is running and conected, it would hang diskmgmt, vssadmin list writers, chkdsk.,

if i make the Microsoft Iscsi service disabled and rebooted , things would work normally again with diskmgmg, vss,etc until i start the iscsi initiator service.

I am looking for some help to clear iscsi configuration or to start from scratch on iscsi part. suspecting some ghost/persistent  drives may be causing this.

What has been tried.

uninstall/reinstall drivers from devmgmt.

updated OS patches to latest.

evicted and added the node back.

ran the validation tests -> successful.

Thank you

Failover Cluster SQL

Muchas gracias

Enabling encyption for data at rest

$

Hi, so we are having an audit for SOC 2 certification. One of the requirements is that data at rest is encrypted. All the data evolved (that needs to be encrypted), is in a SQL Server web version database, on a virtual machine, in a Windows Hyper-V Cluster, on a Dell SCv2020 storage array. I been looking at ways to meet this requirement. Encryption isn't available on SQL Server Web version, our backup software - Veeam has issues with Hyper-V Encryption Support/Shielding, not sure if BitLocker is a good idea - maybe, and the storage array doesn't seem to have an "encryption" option although I wonder if RAID can be considered encryption as it uses algorithms and removing a disk makes the disk useless (I think I would need some professional reference if I try to make that case). This is only to check the block for data at rest being encrypted. The data is just as secure with or without this encryption.

Does anyone have any ideas that might be of help?

Thanks,

Cause for 2012 R2 Cluster service to Stop

The two nodes of a 2012 R2 Cluster lost communication.  The System event log showserror 55 with hundreds of entries back to Nov 2019 and a single error 1230 at the time of the outage.  I am comfortable with what happened and how we recovered from it.  I have been tasked the Root Cause analysis report and it asks 'why' and 'lessons learned' to prevent repeating the failure in the future incidents.

Please advise.

VDI Host Fail-over clustering is Down

Hi

Please help us on what are the solution on our issue. Current  cluster is down and unable to up.

Step taken and basic troubleshooting :

1. Stop/disabled “Cluster Services “ in services and reboot the problematic host “VDI node”. Then we enabled and restarted the services.  – Still unable to up the node VDI node " in the cluster.

2. Validate the cluster configuration of host in the failover cluster manager.  –

Error found  saying that :

 A. This because the witness was not accessible. Please ensure that the witness resource is online and available.

 B. Failed to join the cluster because it could not communicate over the network with any other node in the cluster. Verify network connectivity and configuration of any network firewalls.

C. Suspected an issue with communication on UDP port  3343.

3. Pinging vice versa the IP’s from node “VDI node1 to VDI node2” . – Pingable on both host. See the actual current status below.

4. Gathered both  logs from “cluster event Logs and event viewer”

Thanks

We have 3 Node S2D Cluster using Iwarp and QL41262 25GB NIC's.

When I run Get-NetAdapterRdma on any node I get that RDMA is enabled.

Same issue on 2 separate clusters (both have 2x Server 2016 nodes) after cluster aware update (which only done first node!) As it failed the second node never updated & that is why it still works!

Both have failed cluster:

Node '' failed to form a cluster. This was because the witness was not accessible. Please ensure that the witness resource is online and available.

Cluster node '' failed to join the cluster because it could not communicate over the network with any other node in the cluster. Verify network connectivity and configuration of any network firewalls.

There is nothing wrong with witness disk, it is accessible fine, shows in Disk Management as Reserved (exactly as it should)

There are known issues with this update, but none states that it would kill Cluster!

Windows Cluster 2012 R2 - Impersonation Level Error

Hello,

We are receiving an error saying "An unexpected error is keeping you from renaming the folder. If you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search for help with this problem. Error 0X80070542: Either a required impersonation level was not provided, or the provided impersonation level is invalid. The error occurs when attempting to rename the folder or file in the Volume folder. However, this only occurs on one of the nodes, depending on which node is the owner.

We experienced this with 2 of our customers. However, one of the customers upgraded the OS from 2012 R2 to 2016, therefore, the error did not occur again.

Denying Local Disks from being selected as CSV

Hello,

I recently stood up 2 new host servers in my Hyper-V cluster. Whenever I use Failover Cluster Manager to add disks I've allocated from my SAN, the Add Disk option picks up 4 local disks (from my 2 new hosts) as available storage to add. Now I can just uncheck the boxes and add my SAN space, however, I'd like to remove those as options.

If this helps, the 4 disks are again, across 2 hosts. So 1 SSD drive from each host and 1 RAID 6 2TB Drive from each host.

I can provide more information if needed. Any help with this would be great.

Thanks!

Hi,

One of our Windows 2012 Hyper-V Cluster nodes went down and we reinstalled the windows 2019 on it. Is it possible to recreate the cluster with Windows 2019 and Windows 2012 or must be same OS?

What is the proper way to recreate it?

Thanks.

Event ID 1069 when deleting a VM

Hi,

I have a Hyper-V cluster and use SCVMM to manage the VMs.  Whenever I delete a VM from SCVMM I get an error logged:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Event ID: 1069

Source: FailoverClustering

Task Category: Resource Control Manager

Cluster resource 'SCVMM <vm name> Configuration' of type 'Virtual Machine Configuration' in clustered role 'SCVMM <vm name> Resources' failed.

Based on the failure policies for the resource and role, the cluster service may try to bring the resource online on this node or move the group to another node of the cluster and then restart it.  Check the resource and group state using Failover Cluster Manager or the Get-ClusterResource Windows PowerShell cmdlet.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It does not seem to cause any issues but I may be wrong.

Does anybody know why these errors may be generated when deleting a VM?  Is it normal as I understand this event is a generic event.

Kind regards

File Share in Cluster Help

Good Evening,

I am doing MCSA at the moment, and I am practising through VM's on Hyper-V. After clustering 2 servers and I came to the part to create a file share an error is popping up. I have looked through many forums and articles, I tried all help I found but the error still popped up. Can you please help? The below is the error. Thanks in advance.

WinRM cannot process the request. The following request with error code 0x8009030e occured while using Negotiate authentication. A specified logon session does not exist. It may already have been terminated.
This can occur if the provided credentials are not valid on the target server, or if the server identity could not be verified. If you trust the server identity, add the server name to the TrustedHosts list, and then retry the request. Use winrm.cmd to view or edit the TrustedHosts list. Note that computers in the TrustedHosts list might not be authenticated. For more information about how to edit the TrustedHosts list, run the following command: winrm help config.

In process of testing on clusterA I removed the Down node & tried to add it, cannot do it!

On clusterB, it is now one node working cluster and the second node cannot join. The cluster will work from either node (if I Shutdown both nodes & power them in different order)

I am able to ping the host names and FQDN's of both nodes and the DNS server from all servers
