HP MSA 2040 move data from Virtual RAID to Linear

$

Hi

I have an MSA 2040 where at the beginning was created liek follows below:

 - 2x set of 12 disks (2.5 900GB, Virtual Raid) with  no spares.
 - 2x set of 5 disks (3.5 4TB, Virtual Raid) with no spares

Right now with data on it we decided to use spare disks and on all sets so this is the configuration we want:

 - 2x set of 12 disks (2.5 900GB, Linear Raid) with  1x spares each.
 - 2x set of 5 disks (3.5 4TB, Linear Raid) with 1x spares each (already created)

With this we need to move the Data on 2.5 disks volumes to the 3.5 disks and create new Raid on them. After that restore the data to original point.

Whats your advice on this and best practices.

Best Regards

File share witness issue |frequently goes offline

I have Windows 2012 2 node fail over cluster and File share witness configured. File share witness frequently goes offline and triggers this events. When I check the File share witness its accessible. Its coming online when I manually bring online. This continues frequesntly and create the tickets. Please suggest a solution

EveNT ID 1052
File share witness resource 'File Share Witness (2)' failed a periodic health check on file share '\\server\FileShareWitness'. Please ensure that file share '\\server\FileShareWitness' exists and is accessible by the cluster.

EveNT ID 1069

Cluster resource 'File Share Witness (2)' of type 'File Share Witness' in clustered role 'Cluster Group' failed.

Based on the failure policies for the resource and role, the cluster service may try to bring the resource online on this node or move the group to another node of the cluster and then restart it.  Check the resource and group state using Failover Cluster Manager or the Get-ClusterResource Windows PowerShell cmdlet.

EveNT ID 1564
File share witness resource 'File Share Witness (2)' failed to arbitrate for the file share '\\Server\FileShareWitness'. Please ensure that file share '\\server\FileShareWitness' exists and is accessible by the cluster.
EveNT ID 1205
The Cluster service failed to bring clustered role 'Cluster Group' completely online or offline. One or more resources may be in a failed state. This may impact the availability of the clustered role.

EveNT ID 1254
Clustered role 'Cluster Group' has exceeded its failover threshold.  It has exhausted the configured number of failover attempts within the failover period of time allotted to it and will be left in a failed state.  No additional attempts will be made to bring the role online or fail it over to another node in the cluster.  Please check the events associated with the failure.  After the issues causing the failure are resolved the role can be brought online manually or the cluster may attempt to bring it online again after the restart delay period.

Hi I have lab with insider windows 2019 cluster which I inplace upgraded to rtm version of 2019 server and cluster is shutdown after while and event id 1809 is listed

This node has been joined to a cluster that has Storage Spaces Direct enabled, which is not validated on the current build. The node will be quarantined.
Microsoft recommends deploying SDDC on WSSD [https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/cloud-platform/software-defined-datacenter] certified hardware offerings for production environments. The WSSD offerings will be pre-validated on Windows Server 2019 in the coming months. In the meantime, we are making the SDDC bits available early to Windows Server 2019 Insiders to allow for testing and evaluation in preparation for WSSD certified hardware becoming available.

Customers interested in upgrading existing WSSD environments to Windows Server 2019 should contact Microsoft for recommendations on how to proceed. Please call Microsoft support [https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4051701/global-customer-service-phone-numbers].

Its kind weird because my s2d cluster is running in VMs is there some registry switch to disable this stupid lock ???

server 2012 R2 clsuter DNS name incorrect

one (1) clsuter is created with two (2) identical nodes running server 2012 R2. 2 nodes shows Up, 2 networks (network1 and network2) status is UP, Named cluster is Online and IP Address (clsuter) is Online too. They are all in Green. but the error shows 1196 (node1) /1205 (node2).

The error exists whatever the cluster is created by "Create cluster wizard" with/without "prestage cluster computer objects in active directry domain services" and the clsuter name added to the DNS prior teh cluster setup.

It's weird from ADUC, DNS name shows the cluster name instead of the DNS (another phical server in the same domain) that is set up in NIC of the nodes.

It seems that the root cause of 1196/1205 is due to the incorrect DNS. How to fix? Please advise.

thanks

Hello,

How are you? I created a cluster with Hyper V Server 2016. I have some doubts about quorum disk:

As best practice I have to created quorum disk on storage? And present to all nodes?

1024mb? 512mb?

I have to assing a letter? It will be visible only from one node?

Thanks in advance

Unknown disk - not visible

Hello,

How are you? I have a cluster of Hyper V 2016 Server. Actually I have two nodes (HP BL460c gen 8).

I presented to them two volumes(HP EVA 4400). Then I converted to CSV

Yesterday both volumes were visible from HyperV Servers but not today:

Yesterday:

HyperV_1 can see both volumes

HyperV_2 can see both volumes

Today:

HyperV_1 can see only volume_2

HyperV_2 can see only volume_1

If I "list disk" from diskpart I dont see both volumes. But if I go to Disk Manager I see as "Unknown" and "Reserved"

How Is possible? Driver Issue? The volumes are presented correctly from storage

Any idea?

Thanks in advance

Reconfigured Raid 6 virtual disk not reflecting added space in Hyper-V 2012

I've added two new 2TB hard drives to a Dell Poweredge T630 with a PERC H730 configured in a raid 6. I had it reconfigure via Dell Openmanage and it took about a week but now the virtual drive reflects the new space.  However, Hyper-V doesn't.  I'm assuming I need to expand that partition but I'm not sure how to do it while everything is online and without losing any data.  Or if that's even possible. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

S2D Cluster Pool Owner RAM is totally consumed

Hello Technet,

I have a 6 node Server 2016 S2D Hyper-V cluster running v1607.  I am encountering an issue where the cluster pool owner's ram is gradually consumed.  I opened a ticket with MS a couple of months back but at the time we did not determine the exact cause of the issue.  A reboot fixed the issue, and I closed the ticket without a known resolution.  Recently I performed the same task on another node exhibiting the same problem.  I have now identified that the cluster pool ownership appears to cause the issue.

Can anyone tell me if this is a known issue, or if there is a fix available?  I'll be engaging MS support today to dig into this and will post anything I get back here.

Cluster Rolling Upgrade - 2012 R2 to 2019 in one step possible?

The documentation on Rolling Cluster Upgrades on docs.microsoft.com (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/failover-clustering/cluster-operating-system-rolling-upgrade) have not been updated to include Windows 2019 yet.  Will it be possible to perform a RCU from an n-2 Cluster Functional Level, or will this be restricted to n-1?  If other words, can I go directly from Windows 2012 R2 to 2019, or is it only 2012 R2 to 2016 or 2016 to 2019?

Thank you

Windows2008 R2 Cluster Management cannot connect to the cluster

Windows2008 R2 Cluster Management cannot connect to cluster.
When open the Cluster Management, the list is empty. How to process it?

When I want to connect to the cluster, it notice me 'You are not allowed to connect to the cluster, because you are not an administrator on the cluster node'.
The cluster is fine after installation until last few months.

The server's firewall is closed, file and printer share is opened.

And I have run the command "netsh winsock reset catalog", then reboot the server, but it is no use.

Please help me, thanks a lot.

Best practice - Network Adapters

Hello,

How are you? Im creating a cluster with 5 nodes with hyper-v server 2016. This 5 nodes are BL460 gen8 and they have only two network adapters.

So which is the best practice for this? Create a teaming for this two adapters? Or use one adapter for domain network and the other adapter for cluster heartbeat?

Thanks in advance

Windows Server 2016 creating Failover Cluster drops the iSCSI targets

$

Hi,

We have 4 blades with Windows 2016 x64 server installed on them with all the updates etc.

There are two drives on each blade, the OS and then a data drive. We have created a virtual VHD disk on each of the blades stored on this drive and mapped them with iSCSI initiator so that each server can see each of the drives, (4 servers in total, seeing all 4 drives).

We run the Failover Cluster Validation Wizard and it does all the relevant tests, such as mounting disks, failover over disks, and they all come back successful during the validation.

When we create the cluster,  all the drives disappear and when you go into iSCSI initiator all the connections are set to 'Reconnecting...' and you can't bring them back online, we have also tried to add our external drive to the server via iSCSI and it's having none of it. Event viewer says the disks have surprised removed!

When you destroy the cluster and give the servers a reboot, all the iSCSI drives re-appear and show as 'Connected'.

In terms of the networking, there are 4 NICs which are all teamed into one, we've tried it this way as well as having separate NICs such as Management and Production & Even Storage, but with no avail.

The fact it works during the validation wizard is baffling, if anyone has any ideas it'd be greatly appreciated!

VM Live Migration Failing

Hello

We have two Windows 2016 STD Servers on a Failover cluster mode. There are 8 VMs hosted on the cluster. Till last month everything was working fine. Now one of the VM (LINUX) which is having 64GB RAM and 5 LUNs of average 500Gb is unable to live migrate to other Host. It is not trying at all and message as 21502. Confirmed VM configuration file is CSV path and no CD/DVD drives attached.

Can anyone please provide some clue.

Regards,

Shibu

Failover Cluster Service and Module Installer Worker High CPU

$

Hi,

I have a Failover cluster running between 2 servers but I have noticed recently that the service is using approx.. 50% CPU. Not sure why this is as I can't see any obvious reason and validation of the cluster doesn't reveal any errors.

The Modules Installer Worker is also showing high CPU 30% - 40%.

Anyone have any clues as to why this might be and any ideas on how to resolve it?

Virtual Disk Repair in an s2d cluster

$

Our scenario is a 6 node cluster Windows Server 2016 DataCenter with full SSD S2D

We have already had some episodes in which a volume in a cluster pool goes offline, after what we suspect to be an internal maintenance procedure (which happens every day at arround 6:30 AM).

We have to remove the pool from the cluster, remove the volumes and then, from inside System Manager - > File Services (in one of the nodes), assign the virtual disk (marked as failed) and then select 'virtual disk repair'.

We have had to 'repeat' the repair for some times (maybe 6 or 7, it goes from 0% to 100% but stays 'failed') until it really gets fixed.

But today, we have done this for 'hundreds' of times with no result, untill some 3 hours. With our hopes already gone, .... bingo, healthy at last.

We don't know if it's the three hours, the hundreds of iterations or what, and have no way of knowing.

Has somebody had a similar experience, and/or knows what is really happening with the repair?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Can't create "File share" resource while one node is paused

$

Hi everybody, is that normal (and I missed something) or is it not?

Scenario: Windows Server 2016 failover cluster, latest cumulative update. CL1 online, CL2 paused.

While I can create a "Client access point", when I try to "Add file share" from GUI it never completes: the GUI shows the cluster is checking the configuration and then that little window just disappears giving no messages at all (when it works, you reach the file share type selection window: Basic, Advanced, NFS basic, NFS advanced).

While I tried a few things, the one that seems to solve is resuming CL2. Any KB/article about that?

I think it is odd to be able to create just some resources but not all when a node is paused.

ANY hint appreciated, really.

Move-ClusterSetVM command in Server 2019

$

Hi there,

I am currently setting up a lab to test out cluster sets in Server 2019 by following https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/storage-spaces/Cluster-Sets

Right now I am stuck on the step for testing out live migrate between cluster sets by running the command Move-ClusterSetVM. The example command shown was -

Move-ClusterSetVM -CimSession CSMASTER -VMName CSVM1 -ClusterName CLUSTER3

But -ClusterName is not even a valid parameter. There is another parameter called -Node, but when I tried to specify a node on a different cluster set, all I got was an error saying the move encountered a terminal failure.

So has anyone managed to get live migration working for cluster sets?
